- China Unicom officially launched iPhones at 6pm on October 30 in Beijing, the People's Daily reported on October 30. The iPhones, without Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity) function, are available for China Unicom's registered or unregistered users, who can either buy the iPhone subscribing to the company's two-year service plan or buy the iPhones without a plan, according to the same source. Aside from Beijing, China Unicom is projected to sell the iPhone in 285 cities nationwide following the initial launch in Beijing.

Meanwhile, China Unicom recently also released the results of a survey regarding its WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) network quality and coverage in 77 cities, the Chinabyte.com reported on October 30. The first round of survey was conducted between August 31 and September 18 in 55 cities and second round was conducted nationwide. The survey included road tests and call tests, as well as the quality in areas of voice calls, video calls, HSPA (High Speed Packet Access), and other services, according to the same source. Chinese telecom equipment supplier ZTE, Huawei, and Swedish telecom equipment supplier Ericsson joined the survey. 10 out of 14 cities (71.4%) tested by ZTE reached ideal standards; 52% of the total cities tested by Huawei and 27 of those tested by Ericsson also reached the same standards.

Of the test results, 30 cities, including 18 major cities and 12 secondary cities, reached China Unicom's ideal standard; 19 cities met good network quality, 17 cities had average quality, and 11 cities had below-average quality, according to the same source.
